Western Bhutan Tour

Trip Overview

Experience the rich cultural and natural wonders of Western Bhutan with our meticulously crafted Western Bhutan Adventure. Over eight days, explore four of Bhutan’s most captivating destinations – Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Phobjika.

Begin your journey in Paro, home to one of the world’s most tranquil and lush international airports. After meeting your local guide and driver, travel to Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital.

In Thimphu, visit the King’s Memorial Chorten, a stupa dedicated to the third king of Bhutan, and the grand Tashicho Dzong. Journey to the Buddha Dordenma statue, a colossal figure of Lord Buddha overlooking the Thimphu valley.

From Thimphu, head to the picturesque Phobjika Valley, known for its glacial landscape and as the wintering ground for the endangered Black-necked Cranes. Explore the serene Gangtey Monastery and the surrounding traditional villages. Enjoy a nature hike along the Gangtey Nature Trail, where you can appreciate the local wildlife and stunning scenery.

Next, travel to Punakha, where you’ll visit the Fertility Temple, Chimi Lakhang, revered by couples seeking children. Situated on a hill with sweeping views of the Punakha Valley, this 15th-century temple was built by Drukpa Kuenley, Bhutan’s “Divine Madman.” Tour the impressive Punakha Dzong, a majestic fortress at the confluence of the Po Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, surrounded by jacaranda trees.

Return to Paro to explore key landmarks such as Ta Dzong, the National Museum, which displays ancient Bhutanese weaponry and military artifacts. Visit Rinpung Dzong, a historic fortress that defended Paro from Tibetan invasions, and Kyichu Lakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples built by Tibetan emperor Songsten Gampo in the 7th century.

Conclude your tour with a hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), perched on a dramatic cliffside. This sacred site is a major pilgrimage destination and a highlight of any visit to Bhutan.

The best times for the Western Bhutan Adventure are from March to May and September to November. The tour is suitable for travelers of all ages and fitness levels. If long hikes (such as the Gangtey Nature Hike and Tiger’s Nest Hike) seem daunting, they can be omitted.
