Upper Mustang Trek: Journey Through Nepal’s Ancient Hidden Kingdom (2025 Guide)

The Upper Mustang Trek transports adventurers to a realm that feels frozen in time former forbidden kingdom of Lo-Manthang. Nestled in the rain shadow of Nepal’s mighty Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, this remarkable journey reveals an enchanting world of wind-carved landscapes, centuries-old Buddhist monasteries, and vibrant cultural traditions that have remained largely unchanged for generations.

Unlike many Himalayan treks, which are drowned in monsoon rains during summer, Upper Mustang offers a unique year-round trekking opportunity with its arid, high-desert climate and breathtaking mountain panoramas.

Why Upper Mustang Should Top Your Nepal Trekking Bucket List

  1. Step into ancient Tibetan culture preserved within Nepal’s borders
  2. Marvel at medieval monasteries housing priceless Buddhist artifacts
  3. Traverse the world’s deepest gorge along the mighty Kali Gandaki
  4. Witness spectacular erosion-sculpted landscapes in shades of ochre, rust, and cream
  5. Experience authentic local hospitality in traditional stone villages
  6. Trek during the summer months when other popular routes are inaccessible
  7. Explore hidden cave systems with mysterious prehistoric paintings

Your Journey Through the Ancient Kingdom: Route Highlights

Your adventure begins in vibrant Kathmandu, where you’ll absorb the capital’s cultural riches before flying to lakeside Pokhara. A spectacular mountain flight then delivers you to Jomsom, gateway to Mustang.

From there, your trek winds through charming villages like Kagbeni historic checkpoint between Lower and Upper Mustang-before ascending to Muktinath’s sacred temple complex. The trail continues through Chusang’s remarkable rock formations and Geling’s pristine white stupas before reaching Charang, with its imposing fortress monastery guarding ancient Buddhist scriptures.

Finally, you’ll enter Lo-Manthang, the walled medieval capital where narrow alleyways lead to the former King’s Palace, vibrant monasteries, and hidden cultural treasures. After immersing yourself in this living museum, your return journey traverses Chogo La pass (the trek’s highest point at 3,840m) before descending through Ghami and Dhakmar, known for its stunning red cliffs said to be stained with a demon’s blood in local folklore.

When to Experience Upper Mustang at Its Best

While accessible nearly year-round, Upper Mustang truly shines during:

  • Spring (March-May): Witness apple orchards in full bloom against clear mountain backdrops
  • Summer (June-August): Enjoy perfect trekking conditions while avoiding monsoon rains that drench other regions
  • Autumn (September-November): Experience crystal-clear skies and comfortable temperatures

Summer trekking- impossible elsewhere in Nepal- is particularly magical in Upper Mustang. While lower regions may experience occasional moisture, the protective rain shadow ensures predominantly dry, sunny days perfect for exploration. During this season, the contrast between verdant lower valleys and the stark high-desert landscape becomes even more dramatic.

This day allows you to prepare for the trek ahead and offers an opportunity to engage with fellow trekkers.

The morning of Day 2 begins with a half-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu’s historical and spiritual landmarks. You’ll visit Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu temples, and Boudhanath Stupa, an important pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. The tour continues to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), offering panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. In the afternoon, you’ll board a scenic flight to Pokhara, a city renowned for its serene lakes and stunning mountain views.

On Day 3, an early morning flight takes you from Pokhara to Jomsom, the gateway to Upper Mustang. The flight offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. After arriving in Jomsom, the trek officially begins as you hike towards Kagbeni, a traditional village that marks the entry to Upper Mustang. This first day of trekking allows you to experience the stark beauty of Mustang’s barren landscape.

On Day 4, the trek continues from Kagbeni to the sacred town of Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, and its temples and eternal flame make it a spiritually enriching experience. Along the way, you’ll pass through arid landscapes, wind-swept canyons, and traditional Mustang villages.

The journey on Day 5 takes you deeper into the Mustang region, as you trek from Muktinath to the village of Chele. Passing through Chusang, you’ll witness stunning rock formations and cliffs, which are a characteristic feature of the Mustang terrain. The trek becomes more challenging as you ascend to higher altitudes, but the breathtaking views of barren valleys and towering peaks make it worth the effort.

On Day 6, the trek takes you from Chele to Geling, a traditional Mustang village surrounded by towering hills. As you approach Charang, you’ll be welcomed by the sight of the Charang Monastery, one of the most significant religious sites in the region.

Day 9 is a rest day dedicated to exploring the fascinating surroundings of Lo-Manthang. You’ll visit Namgyal Gompa, an important monastery in the region, and the village of Tingkhar, located on the western edge of Lo-Manthang. This day offers a deeper dive into the religious and cultural heritage of Upper Mustang, with time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the region.

On Day 10, you’ll leave Lo-Manthang and trek towards Dhakmar, passing through the famous Ghar Gompa, one of the oldest monasteries in Mustang. The landscape changes dramatically as you hike through deep canyons and wind-swept valleys. The trek to Dhakmar is known for its striking red cliffs and ancient cave dwellings, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s geology and history.

The trek on Day 11 takes you from Dhakmar to Ghami, a charming village in Upper Mustang. After reaching Ghami, you’ll descend towards Jomsom via a scenic drive, marking the end of the trekking portion of the journey. The drive offers a final opportunity to take in the rugged beauty of Mustang before returning to lower altitudes.

On Day 12, you’ll take an early morning flight from Jomsom back to Pokhara, retracing the journey with stunning aerial views of the Himalayas. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax and explore the peaceful lakeside area, reflecting on the adventure you’ve just completed.
