After your cultural tour of Kathmandu, you’ll take a scenic drive to the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara, often referred to as the gateway to the Annapurna region. The drive takes around 6-7 hours, offering stunning views of green hills, rivers, and terraced farmlands along the way. Once in Pokhara, you can enjoy a relaxing stroll around the peaceful Fewa Lake and explore the vibrant lakeside market. Pokhara’s serene ambiance, combined with its backdrop of majestic mountains, will set the tone for the adventure ahead.
Your trek officially begins with an early morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. This short but breathtaking flight offers magnificent views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Upon landing in Jomsom, the trekking portion starts with a relatively easy hike to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. As you walk along the Kali Gandaki River, the unique barren landscape and strong winds will give you a taste of what lies ahead. Kagbeni, with its ancient mud-brick houses and monasteries, marks the starting point of the restricted Upper Mustang region.
After completing the formalities for entering Upper Mustang, the trek from Kagbeni to Chele begins. The trail initially follows the Kali Gandaki River before ascending through narrow gorges and high cliffs. You’ll pass through villages like Tangbe and Chhusang, where you can observe traditional Mustang life. The dry, desert-like landscape with red cliffs contrasts with the occasional greenery, and as you approach Chele, you’ll begin to experience the unique culture of the region.
The trek from Chele to Geling takes you deeper into the Mustang region. The trail starts with a steep climb, crossing a high pass and offering incredible panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass small villages and ancient monasteries, each one offering insights into the preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture that dominates the region. Geling, your destination for the day, is a small village known for its traditional architecture and terraced fields.
This day’s trek takes you across rugged terrains, including high ridges and passes, as you make your way to Charang. The landscape continues to shift between barren stretches and small green patches around villages. You’ll walk along paths adorned with ancient Mani walls (stones carved with Buddhist mantras), and the colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind add a spiritual element to the journey. Charang is one of the largest villages in Mustang, famous for its white Dzong (fortress) and the Red Monastery, which houses ancient Buddhist scriptures and paintings.
Today, you’ll trek from Charang to Lo-Manthang, the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang. The trail passes through some stunning scenery, including wide valleys and wind-eroded cliffs. Upon reaching Lo-Manthang, you’ll be greeted by the sight of the ancient walled city, which still preserves its medieval charm. Lo-Manthang is known for its royal palace, monasteries, and unique lifestyle. The town is a cultural hub, where you’ll witness the deep-rooted traditions of the Mustang people.
This is a day dedicated to exploring Lo-Manthang and its surroundings. You’ll visit some of the most significant monasteries, such as the Jampa, Thubchen, and Chhoeda Gompas, each with its own unique history and spiritual importance. You’ll also have the opportunity to interact with the local people, many of whom still lead a traditional lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. You can also explore the ancient alleyways, visit local shops, and experience the distinct culture of this once-royal city.
Leaving Lo-Manthang behind, you’ll begin your trek to Yara, passing through a rugged yet beautiful landscape. This part of the journey will take you through high ridges and narrow valleys, offering stunning views of the Mustang region’s unique geography. The highlight of this trek is the natural sand formations around Yara, which look like castles sculpted by wind and water. The remote and peaceful village of Yara offers a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Lo-Manthang.
Today, you’ll make a short hike to the Luri Gompa, a monastery tucked away in the cliffs. The gompa is renowned for its ancient cave paintings and sculptures, which date back centuries. The spiritual aura of the place, combined with its remote location, makes it a truly memorable visit. After exploring the gompa, you’ll return to Yara for an overnight stay. The day offers a mix of cultural immersion and spectacular natural beauty.
This day’s trek takes you from Yara to Tangya, crossing several passes and descending into the valley below. The route offers more of Mustang’s signature barren yet awe-inspiring landscape. Tangya is a small, traditional village where you’ll experience the simple lifestyle of the locals. It’s a quiet and peaceful place, offering trekkers a chance to rest and reflect on the journey so far.
Continuing the trek, you’ll head towards Tetang, a village situated in a valley surrounded by high cliffs. The trail is a combination of ascending and descending, passing through more of Mustang’s desert-like terrain. Tetang offers a glimpse of life in one of the more remote villages in the region. The village’s traditional houses and terraced fields make it a picturesque stop on your journey.
On this day, you’ll trek to the sacred site of Muktinath, a pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. The trail takes you through scenic landscapes, and as you approach Muktinath, you’ll notice the spiritual energy of the place. The temple itself is renowned for its 108 water spouts and the eternal flame that burns from natural gas. The peaceful atmosphere of Muktinath provides a perfect setting for reflection and spiritual exploration.
After a serene morning at Muktinath, you’ll start your descent towards Jomsom, retracing some of your earlier steps. The trek offers stunning views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountain ranges as you make your way through the Kali Gandaki valley. Jomsom, located along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, is your final stop before flying back to Pokhara. The bustling town is a hub for trekkers and offers plenty of amenities to relax after the long trek.
You’ll catch an early morning flight from Jomsom back to Pokhara, giving you one last chance to witness the stunning mountain vistas from above. Upon arriving in Pokhara, the rest of the day is yours to relax and explore. You can visit popular spots like Davis Falls, the World Peace Pagoda, or take a boat ride on Fewa Lake. After the rugged terrain of Mustang, Pokhara’s tranquil environment will feel like a refreshing change.
After a leisurely breakfast in Pokhara, you’ll embark on a scenic drive back to Kathmandu. The journey takes you along the same winding roads, offering one last look at Nepal’s beautiful countryside. Once back in Kathmandu, you’ll have some time to do any last-minute shopping or sightseeing before your departure. The evening can be spent reflecting on the incredible journey you’ve completed.
Your Mustang Yara trek comes to an end today. Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure. As you bid farewell to Nepal, you’ll carry with you the memories of the trek, the unique culture of Mustang, and the stunning natural beauty of the Himalayas.
