Discover the remote beauty of the Annapurna region on this 10-day Khopra Danda Trek with Khayer Lake. The journey combines panoramic Himalayan views from Khopra Danda (3,660m), a challenging high-altitude hike to sacred Khayer Lake (approximately 4,660m), and a sunrise visit to Poon Hill (3,210m).
The highlight is the demanding round-trip hike from Khopra Danda to Khayer Lake. With a substantial climb to high alpine terrain and several hours of walking at altitude, this excursion requires good fitness, careful pacing, and suitable weather conditions. An additional rest day at Khopra Danda gives you time to recover and prepare before attempting the lake hike.
Along the way, you’ll walk through rhododendron and oak forests, traditional Gurung and Magar villages, alpine meadows, and scenic mountain ridges. The trek then descends through Swanta and Ghorepani, where an early-morning visit to Poon Hill provides one final panoramic Himalayan viewpoint.
This itinerary is best suited to trekkers seeking a more demanding adventure than the standard Khopra Danda route. If you want to explore Khopra Danda without the long high-altitude excursion, consider our Khopra Danda Trek or Khopra Danda Trek with Poon Hill instead.
This trek is ideal for travelers who want to go beyond the Khopra Danda viewpoint and experience the remote alpine landscape surrounding Khayer Lake. The combination of ridge-top mountain panoramas, a demanding lake excursion, and the classic Poon Hill sunrise makes it a varied and physically challenging Annapurna adventure.
Unlike our other Khopra Danda packages, this itinerary includes a dedicated day for the lake excursion and an additional night at Khopra Danda before the hike. It is a good choice for fit trekkers who are comfortable with long walking days and understand the challenges of trekking at high altitude.
Khayer Lake is approximately 8–9 km one way from Khopra Danda (Khopra Ridge), making the total round-trip distance around 16–18 km. The hike typically takes about 8–10 hours round trip, depending on your pace, weather, and trail conditions.
The route climbs from Khopra Danda into exposed high-altitude alpine terrain, reaching approximately 4,660 m near the lake. With limited facilities along the way and a substantial elevation gain, this is one of the most physically demanding parts of the trek. An early start with an experienced guide is recommended, along with adequate water, food, and warm clothing.
Expect a varied Himalayan adventure combining peaceful forest trails, traditional mountain villages, open ridgelines, and dramatic alpine landscapes. Along the way, you’ll experience the local culture of Gurung and Magar communities and enjoy panoramic views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre from Khopra Danda.
The highlight is the hike to sacred Khayer Lake, where the landscape becomes more rugged and remote as you climb above the treeline. The high altitude and long walking hours make this the most demanding part of the journey, but the trek also offers time to rest at Khopra Danda before the excursion.
The adventure concludes with the famous sunrise panorama from Poon Hill, adding another memorable mountain viewpoint to your journey through the Annapurna region.
The Khopra Danda Trek with Khayer Lake is a moderate-to-difficult trek, best suited to travelers with good physical fitness who are comfortable with long days of walking and high-altitude terrain. While the route does not involve technical climbing, it includes sustained uphill and downhill sections, uneven mountain trails, and a demanding excursion to Khayer Lake at approximately 4,660 m.
The most challenging part is the round-trip hike from Khopra Danda to Khayer Lake, which may take around 8–10 hours depending on your pace, weather, and trail conditions. At this altitude, the reduced oxygen level can make walking more strenuous, even for fit trekkers.
The route also includes exposed alpine terrain and limited facilities, so an early start, suitable clothing, adequate food and water, and guidance from an experienced trekking guide are important.
An additional rest day at Khopra Danda is included before the lake excursion to allow time to recover and prepare. However, this does not guarantee adequate acclimatization or remove the risk of altitude sickness.
Your guide should assess conditions and your wellbeing before the hike, and you should never continue ascending if you develop symptoms of altitude sickness.
You do not necessarily need previous mountaineering experience, but you should be prepared for consecutive days of trekking and one particularly long day at high altitude. Regular walking, hill hiking, stair training, and cardiovascular exercise before the trip can help you prepare.

This is rated moderate to difficult — the most demanding of the three Khopra Danda itineraries, due to the long (8–10 hour) high-altitude day to Khayer Lake and back.
The Khopra Danda Trek with Khayer Lake version adds both a demanding side trip to Khayer Lake (4,500m+) and the Poon Hill sunrise viewpoint, making it the most complete but also the most physically demanding option. The standard Khopra Danda Trek skips both; Khopra Danda Trek with Poon Hill adds Poon Hill but not Khayer Lake.
Khayer Lake is a remote, high-altitude glacial lake beneath Dhaulagiri, considered sacred by local communities and rarely visited due to the demanding terrain required to reach it.
Khayer Lake is approximately 8–9 kilometers (5–5.5 miles) from Khopra Danda (Khopra Ridge) one way, making the round-trip distance roughly 14–18 kilometers (8.7–11 miles).
The altitude of Khayer Lake is 4,660 meters (15,289 feet) above sea level.
An Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card are required, both arranged by Save Mountain Treks and included in your package.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most stable weather and clearest visibility for the high-altitude Khayer Lake day.
